Back Pain Relief Without Drugs

By Ryan Davis

Nothing is more debilitating and limiting than an injury to the back. Short term solutions to a small problem may just require medication to relieve symptoms or to reduce inflammation. This is not always the answer and often there is a serious problem that needs fixing and this will need medical attention or professional back pain relief.

When the spine slips out of alignment it can press onto the myriad nerve bundles that run down the spinal column. A slipped disc in the lumbar region can cause sciatica (shooting pains through the hip and legs) and in extreme cases incontinence or loss of feeling in the lower limbs. Problems in the upper region of the spine can cause compressions to blood flow to the brain leading to headaches and symptoms like vertigo.

In Blue Bell, PA. There are chiropractors and osteopaths who are trained to identify and rectify spinal problems. They will assess the patients symptom's and observe their stance and gait to determine which part of the spine is out of alignment. Once the cause has been identified then treatment can begin.

If the spine has moved from its natural position the muscles around will contract and go into spasm as this is the way the body protects itself. When this occurs the bones cannot be put back into place as they normally would be. There are many methods the therapists can use to relax the muscles first before initiating any manipulation.

Many people are advised to use cold treatment to control blood flow to the inflamed areas. This type of treatment is very convenient as in most cases it can be done in the home by the patient. Frozen gel packs or adhesive pads can be obtained from your local pharmacy and are not expensive. Some simple exercise routines to be done daily may also help to alleviate the pain.

Acupuncture is also an extremely effective way to reduce the inflammation in the muscles. This must be carried out be a specialist who will know exactly where to locate the needles for best results. The patient may feel that the pain is being drawn to the spot where the needle is inserted and disappears completely once the needle is removed. This treatment is also excellent where there is just a simple strain with no spinal movement.

Ultrasound can also be used to relax the muscles around the area which is causing pain. This is a very popular course of treatment for many people with a fear of needles or those who have a drug intolerance. The ultrasonic waves pass through the muscles and surrounding tissue and relieve the tension in that area. Another similar option is to use a TENS machine which targets the muscle with small electrical shocks.

Massage therapy is also an excellent way to combat the symptoms and cause of back problems. Gentle pressure is applied to the affected areas to soften the tense muscles and then the vertebrae can be gently manipulated back into proper position. A patient who fears both needles and the dreaded cracking sound of traditional manipulation will find this the best option for them.
